Meditation is a state of mind that is open, receptive, balanced, and grounded. You could say that meditation is the development of a sustained, gentle presence. Open Sky Meditation aims to help practitioners clarify the different attitudes and understandings that inform our perceptions of ourself, our relationships, and our life. This allows our practice to be applicable to daily life so that we develop a greater sense of peacefulness, ease and well-being.

We provide sitting cushions, chairs, and blankets. You are also welcome to bring any seating or additional things, like shawls or blankets, that are comfortable for you. If you have a specific accessibility need, please reach out to us at openskywallawalla@gmail.com so we can do our best to accommodate you and others who may have the same need.
Wear whatever is comfortable and preferably kind of quiet (if you can, maybe avoid your swishy nylon pants). More than anything, we want you to feel like you can relax.

In alignment with the traditional structure of the Buddha’s sangha (community of practitioners), Open Sky is fully donation-based, a practice known as offering dāna. While the Dharma Leaders and administrative core of the group offer their time freely, there are real costs to holding these meditation groups - such as space rental, website, insurance, etc. Your donations make this community possible and we deeply appreciate your support. We are able to accept donations via cash, Venmo and check, as well as credit card via our website’s donation page.

Each 60-minute class is held with the same structure, regardless of which Dharma Leader is teaching. You can expect a 10-15 minute Dharma (philosophy) talk, 30 minute guided meditation, and 10-15 minutes of Q&A, community sharing, or light movement.

Open Sky is a multi-lineage Buddhist meditation community, meaning that our Dharma Leaders (teachers) have practiced in multiple different styles and perspectives. Mindfulness, awareness, is a part of all meditation practices. Depending on the teacher and their training, there may be more or less emphasis on developing mindfulness. We aim to help new practitioners find - and experienced practitioners deepen - their own unique practice in the ways that support them.

You don’t need any experience to join us for classes, and to be honest, all of us are beginning again every day. We’ll offer some philosophy as well as simple meditation instruction during each gathering, and we encourage all to ask questions. If nothing else, coming to a quiet space where you can rest for an hour is a great thing to do!
